Privacy Policy

Charting Impact is a strategic alliance among the BBB Wise Giving Alliance, GuideStar, USA, Inc. (“GuideStar”, “we” or “us”) and Independent Sector, Inc. (“Independent Sector”).  GuideStar operates the website located at the URL www.chartingimpact.org (the “Charting Impact Site”) on behalf of Charting Impact and integrates certain aspects of the Charting Impact Site with the GuideStar website located at www.guidestar.org, as described in greater detail below.  GuideStar will share information collected through the Charting Impact Site with BBB Wise Giving Alliance and Independent Sector.  BBB Wise Giving Alliance and Independent Sector’s use of such information will be governed by this Privacy Policy.

GuideStar, BBB Wise Giving Alliance and Independent Sector respect the privacy of users of the Charting Impact Site. Please read this Privacy Policy carefully so that you understand what information GuideStar collects through this web site located at http://www.chartingimpact.org (the “Site”) and what we do with that information. This Privacy Policy applies to information collected online through the Charting Impact Site and to information that we collect through surveys to nonprofit organizations (and users who act on their behalf) and to external stakeholders identified by nonprofit organization users.  If you have any questions regarding this Privacy Policy, please contact us at NPOservices@guidestar.org.

BY USING THE CHARTING IMPACT SITE, YOU AGREE THAT YOUR USE AND ANY DISPUTES OVER OUR ONLINE PRIVACY PRACTICES IS GOVERNED BY THIS PRIVACY POLICY AND OUR TERMS OF USE.

THE INFORMATION THAT WE COLLECT

The information we gather falls into two categories: (1) nonprofit profile, program and contact information (for example, your organization’s responses to the five questions about the intended impact of your charitable activities) that you voluntarily supply as part of your use of the Charting Impact Site, and (2) information gathered on usage patterns and preferences as users navigate through the Charting Impact Site. In some cases, it is a vendor or affiliate of ours that collects the information on our behalf.  Unless otherwise specified, our vendors and affiliates who are acting on our behalf will be subject to the same terms and conditions as those specified in this Privacy Policy.

Nonprofit profile, program information and contact information of nonprofit organization users.  You will be asked to complete a basic profile about your nonprofit organization and to answer five questions about the intended impact of your nonprofit organization’s work. As available, basic information in your nonprofit organization’s profile will be pre-populated from GuideStar’s database of nonprofit organizations. This information, together with the information that you share will create a Charting Impact Report (as defined in our TOU Agreement).

In order to create a Charting Impact Report, your organization must be a registered nonprofit organization at www.guidestar.org (the “GuideStar Site”).  Registered GuideStar nonprofit organizations and individual users who access the GuideStar Site on such organizations’ behalf, provide certain information about themselves, such as their name, e-mail address and password. GuideStar authenticates this information and grants authenticated users permissions to edit the GuideStar reports and Charting Impact Reports created for their nonprofit organizations.

At the Charting Impact Site, you will have the opportunity to add and to delete the email addresses of other users who work for or are otherwise affiliated with your nonprofit organization that you invite to participate to help complete the Charting Impact Report for your nonprofit organization. In addition, you will be asked to complete a brief survey about how your nonprofit organization currently plans and evaluates its charitable activities. You will also be asked to provide the names and email addresses of three or more external stakeholders (such as board members, major donors, advisors) that you would like us to contact on your nonprofit organization’s behalf as part of a stakeholder review of your organization’s unique Charting Impact Report.

Cookies.  To help make the Charting Impact Site more responsive to the needs of our users, we use a standard feature of browser software, called a “cookie,” to assign each visitor a unique, random number, a sort of user ID, if you will, that resides on your computer. The cookie does not actually identify the visitor; it only identifies the computer that a visitor uses to access the Charting Impact Site.  The only personal information a cookie can contain is information you supply.  A cookie cannot read unrelated data off your hard drive. We use cookies to help us tailor the Charting Impact Site to the needs of our users.  In addition, we may use cookies to track the pages on the Charting Impact Site visited by our users so that we understand which areas visitors find most useful.  You can block or remove cookies by using the settings in your browser.

Browser Level Information and IP Addresses.  We automatically collect limited information about your computer configuration when you visit the Charting Impact Site, including the type of browser software you use, the operating system your computer is running, the resolution of your computer monitor, the website that referred you. We use this information to deliver our web pages to you upon request, to tailor the Charting Impact Site to the interests of our users, and to measure traffic within the Charting Impact Site.  We also may collect your IP address, a numerical address that is used by computers connected to the Internet, to identify your computer so that data (such as the web pages you want to view) can be transmitted to you. We also use IP address information for systems administration and trouble shooting purposes. Your IP address does not tell us who you are.
